Turkey's Southeastern Province Hosts Conference On Cooperation Oppportunities With Syria

GAZIANTEP - The governor of a southeastern Turkish province said on Thursday that the new era, which started with bilateral visits between Turkey and Syria, was of great importance for both countries.
Delivering a speech at a conference on "Syrian Economy and Cooperation Opportunities between Turkey and Syria" held in Turkey's southeastern Gaziantep province, Governor Suleyman Kamci said improvement of the economic cooperation between the two countries had great importance.
Kamci said the industrialists and businessmen of Gaziantep tried their best to improve the bilateral relations between Turkey and Syria with an enterprising spirit.
He said the relations could become more fruitful if both countries displayed efforts for the region which had all the necessary infrastructure for the improvement of border trade.
Speaking at the conference, Ruhsar Pekcan, vice chairperson of the Turkish-Syrian Business Council, said that the trade volume between Turkey and Syria increased by 200 percent from 2000 to 2006.
Pekcan also said the trade volume between the countries was expected to exceed 1.5 billion USD by the end of 2008.
Numerous Turkish and Syrian officials as well as businessmen from the two countries attended the conference.
