Turkey's Top Court Cancels Constitutional Amendment Lifting Ban On Wearing Headscarves In Universities

ANKARA - Turkey`s top court Thursday cancelled a constitutional amendment lifting ban on wearing headscarves at universities.
The Turkish Constitutional Court made its decision known on a lawsuit filed by the opposition Republican People`s Party (CHP) and Democratic Left Party (DSP) on February 27th, asking the judges to either cancel the amendments or declare them null and void, and halt their execution until the case is concluded, with a written statement on Thursday.
"The law of February 9th making constitutional amendments to lift a ban on headscarf at universities has been cancelled based on the Constitution`s articles no. 2, 4 and 148. The execution of the law has also been stopped", said the Constitution Court on Thursday.
The law of February 9th amended articles 10 (equality before law) and 42 (right and duty of training and education) of the Constitution.
