One killed, five injured as quake jolts eastern Turkey

ISTANBUL, July 30 (AFP) - One person was killed and five others injured Friday when an earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale shook the eastern Turkish town of Dogubeyazit close to the border with Iran, the Anatolia news agency said.
It said a 16-year-old youth, Yasin Tilbe, suffered head injuries in the panic following the tremor, and died later in the hospital at Igdir.
The tremor, which caused minor damage, struck at 10:14 am (0714 GMT) with an epicentre 18 kilometres (about 11 miles) northeast of the town, according to the Istanbul-based Kandilli seismological institute.
The governor of Dogubeyazit, Nurullah Cakir, told Anatolia that the injuries occurred when people jumped from their balconies and windows.
Reports from rural villages suggested some houses there had toppled in the quake, he added.
Turkey is crossed by several major fault lines and earthquakes are frequent.
On July 2, a quake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hit a nearby rural area, killing 18 people.
