ANKARA - Turkey on Monday welcomed election of General Michel Suleiman as Lebanese President and congratulated Suleiman over his new post.
Lebanon`s Parliament elected Suleiman as new president at a meeting held on May 25th, a Turkish Foreign Ministry statement said.
The statement said Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister attended the Lebanese Parliamen`s session that was held as a result of an agreement reached on May 21st after talks in Doha.
The statement said Turkey wished Lebanese people to leave behind the long-lasting problems and sorrows, and wanted this step to help Lebanon to live in unity, in the basis of national interests, peace, tranquility, stability and welfare.
The statement said support of international community as well as dedicated efforts of Lebanese groups would be significant to achieve this target.
"Turkey will continue to support Lebanese people as it happens so far," the statement added.
