ANKARA - Turkish President Abdullah Gul said on Monday that he was closely following political and legal discussions that have intensified recently within the country.
"It is the task of all people and institutions to act in line with customs and traditions and to prevent the discussions in question to reach a point that may damage fundamental principles of the Constitution, Turkey`s national interests and esteem, national unity and integrity, as well as economic and political stability," Gul said in a written statement.
Gul said as it happens in all democracies it was natural and necessary that every segment of the society discuss every matter directly interesting the nation and the world.
"Common sense of public will finally determine the validity and rightfulness of the views in question" he said.
Gul referred to his meetings with the leaders of political parties, economic and social organizations, media and think-tank organizations, as well as the NGOs, adding that, "I have very clearly expressed my concerns, suggestions and recommendations to my counterparts."
"I would like to underscore that we should not allow political and legal discussions to destroy strategic interests and targets; and erode stability, esteem and acquisitions," Gul also said.
