Iraq Guard Killed, Nine Wounded In Ambush Near Iran Border

BAQUBA, Iraq, July 29 (AFP) - An Iraqi border guard was killed and nine others wounded when insurgents ambushed their convoy near the Iranian border on Thursday morning, the border security unit said.
The man died north of the flashpoint city of Baquba, where a suicide bombing killed 70 people and wounded 56 on Wednesday.
A gang of about 50 attackers fired rocket-propelled grenades, mortar rounds and small arms on the 30-man convoy as it headed to Baquba from Khanaqin, General Nazem Sherif Mohammed, head of the unit, said.
The clashes lasted for two hours as the insurgents, in 10 vehicles, chased after the officials' convoy, Mohammed added.
North of Baghdad, US soldiers and Iraqi officers arrested 39 suspected militants, including two known targets, in an overnight sweep near Rawashi, the US military said.
The detainees are suspected of attacking foreign troops on seven separate occasions since March, it added.
