JERUSALEM, July 29 (AFP) - Former Palestinian information minister Nabil Amr had his right foot amputated in a German hospital after he was shot by unknown assailants earlier this month in the West Bank, his daughter said Thursday.
"My brother Marwan who accompanied my father to Germany told me he had his foot amputated yesterday," a tearful Narmin Amr told AFP in a phone conversation.
"With God`s help, I have to be strong," she added with tears in her voice.
A Palestinian diplomat in Jordan said earlier Wednesday that Amr had had his right leg amputated rather than just his foot.
"German surgeons amputated Mr. Amr`s right leg on Wednesday," said Attalah Khairy, Palestinian charge d`affaires in Amman.
"The doctors were forced to amputate because of complications," Khairy said, adding that the ex-minister was "now out of danger and in a good condition".
Amr was attacked in Ramallah on July 20 by gunmen who beat him and shot him several times. The bones of his right leg were shattered in the incident. He has denounced the shooting as an assassination attempt.
First hospitalised in the Jordanian capital, he was flown to Germany on Sunday for further treatment.
The shooting came amid a wave of violent protests following the appointment by Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat of his cousin Musa Arafat as security chief for the Palestinian territories. Arafat later backed down on the appointment.
Amr, who served in the cabinet under previous prime minister Mahmud Abbas, was one of the authors of a recent damning parliamentary report on the deteriorating security crisis in the Palestinian territories.
Palestinian gunmen had targeted his home a year ago, after he made comments severely criticising Arafat`s conduct as Palestinian leader.
