ISTANBUL - A group of successful Turkish high school students were awarded at two international science competitions held recently in USA.
Students from Istanbul's Private Cag Fatih High School won medals at the International Sustainable World (Energy, Engineering & Environment) Project Olympiad (I-SWEEP) and Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (INTEL-ISEF) with their project on "Sunflowers".
Alihan Zenginer, competing at I-SWEEP's "Senior Environment" category, won a gold medal with his project titled "Modification of Sunflower Stalk Extracts with Boric Acid and Their Usage as High Performance Insulation Material".
Competing at INTEL-ISEF with the same project, Zenginer and his fellow student from the same school Hasan Tahsin Azizagaoglu won the "Third Award of 1,000 USD".
Over 800 participants from 51 countries and 38 states participated in the I-SWEEEP 2008 in Houston, Texas which was organized by the Cosmos Foundation. Students displayed their projects in three main categories; Energy, Engineering, and Environment to win scholarship opportunities and monetary prizes.
INTEL-ISEF, the world's largest international pre-college science competition, annually provides a forum for more than 1,500 high school students from over 40 countries to showcase their independent research.
