Turkey's Top Court To Debate Headscarf File After A Discussion With Members

ANKARA - Turkey's top court would debate the file on annulment of the constitutional amendment freeing headscarf in universities after exchanging views with members, the chief judge of the court said on Tuesday.
"I will bring up the file after I learn the views of our members," chief judge Hasim Kilic of Turkey's Constitutional Court told reporters.
Turkish lawmakers approved on February 9th constitutional amendments to lift a ban on headscarf in universities. President Abdullah Gul ratified the law on February 22nd. The law amends articles 10 (equality before law) and 42 (right and duty of training and education) of the Constitution.
On February 27th, the opposition Republican People's Party and Democratic Left Party (DSP) referred to the Constitutional Court, asking the judges to either cancel the amendments or consider them nonexistent, and halt the proceedings regarding the mentioned law, until the case was finalized.
The court held its first meeting on the issue on March 6th, and ruled that the application (of the political parties) was in line with rules and methods, and was made on time. Thus, the top court decided to deal with the case.
