Lonesome Women Street Becomes Assosiation

IZMIR - Women who are living in ''Lonesome Women Street'' in Ýzmir will unite under an association.
Most of the residents of the street, which is in Degirmendagi district of Konak town of western Izmir province, are widows and they are not positive for a second marriage.
Residents of ''Lonesome Women Street'' are grandchildren of widowed women who migrated from Crimea to Izmir, 450 years ago.
Gungor district official Lutfiye Aykulteli, who is also a widow, told A.A correspondent that many men died in Crimea due to war and pressures of officials of Czardom Russia. She added that women and children were settled with a few men in Degirmendagi district of Izmir with the order of Ottoman Sultan of that period.
Aykulteli said that many men, after moving to the district, fell in wars at Canakkale, Balkans, Tripoli and Yemen fronts.
Aykulteli said that they launched initiatives to form an association for the solidarity of the women of ''Lonesome Women Street'', adding that they were expecting the support of Turkish people.
