ANKARA - Turkey`s underground water storage areas will be fed with water in an effort to protect Turkish cities of Konya, Izmir, Bursa, Aydin, Manisa, Erzurum and the Trakya region against drought.
Turkey`s Energy and Natural Resources Ministry decided to take action against the threat of global warming and drought.
Within this framework, a working group which would examine the effects of global warming was established under the roof of the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration (MTA).
The group, consisting of sociologists, biologists, archeologists, agricultural engineers, psychologists, paleontologists and geophysical engineers, will scientifically examine Turkey`s climate periods.
In the light of the examinations, the group will later develop projects and offer certain changes in the relevant legislation.
Many rivers, lakes and aquifers in Turkey are about to vanish due to global warming, MTA officials said.
Therefore, the aquifers all across Turkey, and mainly the regions which are under maximum risk, will be fed with water against the danger of a probable drought, officials added.
The underground water storage areas in Turkey as well as the amount of the remaining underground water in such areas will be determined by officials. Later on, water will be pumped in those areas without disrupting the ecological balance.
An aquifer is an underground layer of water-bearing permeable rock or unconsolidated materials (gravel, sand, silt, or clay) from which groundwater can be usefully extracted using a water well.
