Rockets Fired At Strategic Afghan Airport

HERAT, Afghanistan, July 27 (AFP) - Militants fired two rockets at a strategic airport often used by US-led forces in the western Afghan province of Herat but there were no casualties, an official said Tuesday.
The pair of projectiles landed on the perimeter of Herat airport in the early hours of Tuesday without causing any damage, provincial police commander Ziauddin Muhmoodi told AFP.
Muhmoodi blamed "the enemies of Afghanistan," a label the Afghan authorities usually use for the remnants of ousted Taliban militia and Al-Qaeda.
Taliban fundamentalists ousted by a US-led military offensive in late 2001 are still carrying out attacks on foreign and pro-government troops around the country.
Herat, which borders Iran in the west and Turkmenistan in the northwest, is one of Afghanistan's strategic trade centers and ruled by a powerful warlord, General Ismail Khan who has repeatedly by-passed the administration in Kabul.
Hundreds of the 20,000-strong US-led troops are operating a civil-military operation called the 'Provincial Reconstruction Team' in Herat, aiming to deliver aid to the local population and speed the disarmament of private militias.
