KABUL, July 26 (AFP) - An under-construction Afghan hospital building caved in here Monday injuring at least 17 people and trapping many others in the debris, officials said.
Building work was in progress on the Jamhoriat hospital in the central part of the Afghan capital when the structure collapsed.
Rescue teams have pulled out 17 injured from the rubble while efforts were underway to salvage others workers believed to be trapped, interior ministry spokesman Lutfullah Mashal told AFP.
Scaffolding broke up, causing the collapse of the roof and the walls, he said.
"We do not know exactly how many people are trapped and whether any of them have died at this point," Mashal said.
It was not the result of any sabotage, said Kabul deputy police Chief Mohammed Shafiq Fazli, adding that it was an accident.
