MOSUL, Iraq, July 26 (AFP) - Four people, including a child, were killed and five others wounded in a suicide bombing outside the main US military base in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Monday, the US military said.
"At approximately 8:02 (0402 GMT) a car loaded with explosives detonated 50 metres (yards) from the main gate of the Mosul airfield," it said.
"One Iraqi civilian and one child were killed when the car exploded. One Iraqi facility protective service employee ... later died of wounds. The driver of the vehicle was also killed in the explosion."
Three US soldiers and two security guards were wounded, the statement added.
The US military initially reported that the vehicle used in the attack was a pick-up truck, but said later it was a maroon Chevrolet Caprice.
A cache of 122 mm rockets and 60 mm mortar rounds loaded inside the car failed to explode, minimising the damage from the blast.
The US military spokesman denied earlier reports that two separate car bombs were used in the attack.
Iraqi police, meanwhile, said two Iranians had been arrested and weapons, including surface-to-air missiles and explosives, were seized in Mosul during US-backed raids earlier this month.
"We were able to capture a lot of weapons and explosives and also a terrorist gang, including two Iranians, while in another raid we found the leader of a terrorist gang," said provincial police chief Mohammed Barhawi.
He said three abandoned cars packed with explosives had also been impounded, one of which was parked near a mosque.
The raids were conducted between July 1 and 12 in Mosul.
On June 24, five car bombs exploded in this city, killing 44 people and wounding more than 200.
