ISTANBUL - The mayor of Istanbul said on Wednesday that the United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization (UNESCO) delegation, which recently made inspections in Istanbul, would prepare a positive report on the city.
Commenting on the inspections conducted by the UNESCO delegation consisting of World Heritage Centre officials, Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbas said the delegation examined the historical peninsula, Galata-Pera region and Halic basin of Istanbul during a 4-day visit.
"The delegation will prepare a report which will later on turn into a decision. As far as I see now, the report will be positive. This is what officials expressed," Topbas said.
Topbas also said that Francesco Bandarin, President of the World Heritage Center, told him that Istanbul made a remarkable progress in recent years and the center did not have any concerns regarding the city`s future.
A group of officials from UNESCO`s World Heritage Centre arrived in Istanbul on May 8th.
The delegation made inspections in historical sites of the city and held talks with Turkish authorities during their 4-day visit.
The delegation`s report on Istanbul will be submitted at the World Heritage Committee`s meeting that will take place in Quebec, Canada, between July 2nd and 10th.
