ANKARA - Number of the unemployed people increased to 2,830,000, and the rate of unemployment rose to 12.4 percent in the first quarter of 2004.
The State Institute of Statistics said on Sunday that total labor force participation rate was estimated to be 45.9 percent according to the preliminary results of the first quarters of 2004 Household Labor Force Survey, which was adapted by the International Labor Organization's (ILO) definitions.
Non-institutional civilian population in Turkey reached 70,155,015 with an increase of 1,081,000 persons compared to the results of the same period of the previous year.
Non-institutional civilian working-age population (15 years old and over) reached 49,482,000 with an increase of 895,000 persons compared to the results of the same period of the previous year.
In the first quarter of 2004, total employment was estimated as 19,902,000 with a decrease of 342,000 persons.
Number of the unemployed people increased to 2,830,000.
The labor force participation rate, which is an important indicator of labor force, decreased from 47.5 percent to 45.9 percent for total, dropped from 43.8 percent to 42.9 percent for urban areas, and reduced from 53.3 percent to 50.8 percent for rural areas.
In the same period, when the labor force participation rate was examined by sex, it increased from 68.7 percent to 69.8 percent for male, and dropped from 26.6 percent to 22.5 percent for female.
