Cyprus Proposes Marcos Kyprianou As An E.U. Commissioner

NICOSIA, July 24 (AFP) - Cyprus has put forward the name of its first EU Commissioner Marcos Kyprianou to serve again as a senior European Union official, said an official statement released here Saturday.
Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos said in a brief statement he was re-submitting Kyprianou's name for an EU Commissioner's post.
Kyprianou was assigned the budgetary portfolio in Brussels after Cyprus joined the European Union on May 1, along with nine other new member states.
He is a former minister in the Papadopoulos government and was an MP of the centre-right Diko party.
His father Spyros Kyprianou was twice president of Cyprus and was regarded as mainly responsible for engineering the island's "economic miracle" after the invasion of 1974 when Turkish troops seized the island's northern third in response to a coup in Nicosia seeking union with Greece.
