ANKARA - The worst train accident occurred in Turkey in 1957. Two passenger trains collided head-on, killing 95 people and injuring 150 others.
According to the Directorate General of Turkish State Railways (TCDD), collision of two trains in Bagistan town of eastern province of Erzincan in 1945 was the first ever train accident in Turkey. 40 people were killed and 40 others were injured in the accident.
Major train accidents in Turkey are as follows:
-Ankara, 1948: passenger train derailed killing 38 people, injuring 103 others.
-Ulukisla, 1952: passenger train derailed in Ulukisla town of central province of Nigde, killing 31 people injuring 15 others.
-Istanbul, 1957: collision of two passenger trains resulted in killing of 95 people. 150 people were injured in the accident.
-Kartal, 1961: two trains collided, killing 15 people injuring 70 others.
-Eskisehir, 1972: collision of two passenger trains: 34 dead and 40 injured.
-Ankara, 1979: two passenger trains collided, killing 16 people and injuring 112 others.
-Ankara , 1979: (only five days later the previous accident): two passenger trains collided, killing 31 people and injuring 81 others.
-Izmit, 1980: collision of two passenger trains left 17 people dead and 25 others injured.
