MAY 1ST, POLICE STATE
Several incidents took place at Taksim Square in Istanbul on May 1st Workers` Day. Workers from several provinces gathered in front of HQ of the Confederation of Revolutionary Workers` Unions (DISK) in Sisli district in Istanbul. Police used water cannons to break up nearly 500 workers. Turkish riot police used clubs, tear gas and water cannons for another group of people who wanted to enter Taksim Square from Osmanbey, Nisantasi, Dolapdere, Kurtulus, Mecidiyekoy, Bomonti and Istiklal Street. Istanbul Governor Muammer Guler said 530 demonstrators were detained on May Day.

RECORD IN EXPORTS
Turkish exports increased 39.16 percent in April, 2008 compared to April, 2007. Turkish Exporters` Assembly (TIM) chairman Oguz Satici announced export figures in April in a press conference in Kutahya. 12-month export figure (as of April) rose 27.61 percent to 117.4 billion USD.

WHY?
The government has escalated tension in the May 1st Labor Day celebrations in Istanbul and the police resorted to extreme force. Security forces used clubs, tear gas and water cannons even on children. What was the reason for such an anger and violence on the Labor Day?
The police used clubs, tear gas and water cannons to break up demonstrators trying to march to the famous Taksim Square. Some 30 thousand policemen were deployed in Istanbul for the celebrations.
At 11:41, DISK Chairman Celebi said they were abandoning plans to march to the square not to become a tool of the government`s provocation.
At the end of the day, 530 people were detained. 38 people including eight policemen were injured. One journalist`s arm was broken while another one was injured in his head.
Istanbul Governor Muammer Guler kept demonstrators accountable for the events. He also admitted that the police`s intervention caused some problems.

TURKISH JETS BOMB PKK CAMPS IN QANDIL
Turkish warplanes launched air strikes against the PKK camps in the northern Iraqi area of Qandil late on Thursday. Meanwhile, eight terrorists including two women surrendered to security forces in the southeastern city of Sirnak.

MAY 1ST IN ISTANBUL
Police used clubs, tear gas and water cannons to break up demonstrators in Istanbul on May 1st Workers` Day. 25,000 police officers were on the streets in Istanbul. The police cordoned off the building of the Confederation of Revolutionary Workers` Unions (DISK). Tear gas was hurled at the building where there were 1,500 people. M. Ali Ozpolat, deputy from the main opposition Republican People`s Party (CHP), had a minor heart attack. A total of 530 demonstrators were detained in Istanbul.

UNAKITAN AND SIMSEK TO ANNOUNCE NEW PLAN
Turkey`s Finance Minister Kemal Unakitan and State Minister Mehmet Simsek will announce new medium term economic plan at the weekend. The government will revise macroeconomic targets including primary surplus.

WORKERS UNDER FEET
The whole world from Russia to France, from Cuba to the United States celebrated the May 1st Labor Day with a great enthusiasm while Turkey became the scene of clashes and police violence once again.
Tension escalated after workers tried to march to Istanbul`s Taksim Square which was banned by the government. 20 thousand security forces used clubs, tear gas and water cannons to disperse workers. 530 people were detained.

DR. OZ AMONG 100 INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE
Prominent cardio surgeon Mehmet Oz of Turkish descent has taken place in the Time magazine`s list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2008. Greek-Orthodox Patriarchate Bartholomew was also in the list.

SEVERAL INJURED ON MAY 1ST WORKERS` DAY
Tension took place between police officers and people from some unions in Sihhiye, Ankara on May 1st Workers` Day. Police fired tear gas and beat workers with clubs. In a separate demonstration, police officers tried to break up a group of people in southern province of Adana and injured several people. 40 people were detained in demonstrations in Adana.

POLITICIANS CONDEMN INCIDENTS IN ISTANBUL
Executives from the Republican People`s Party (CHP) condemned incidents that took place in Istanbul on May 1st Workers` Day and said repressive mind-set did not comply with democracy. Freedom & Solidarity Party (ODP) chairman Ufuk Uras said, "they assumed a hostile attitude against workers."

AK PARTY`S DEMOCRACY ENDS HERE
After the prime minister defined workers as "mob" and the justice minister described the right to hold demonstrators as "uprising against the Constitution", security forces displayed the "logic of war" for the sake of protecting the Taksim Square from workers.

WORLD PUPPETS IN ISTANBUL
The 11th International Istanbul Puppet Festival will begin later in the day. 18 puppet shows from Turkey, Argentina, Austria, Britain, France. Spain, Germany, Italy and Russia will be displayed during the festival.

PREMIER POSTPONES HIS VISITS ABROAD
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan postponed his visits to Africa and South America to determine defense strategies of his Justice and Development (AK) Party against the dissolution and prohibition case. Erdogan postponed his visits abroad that were earlier scheduled for May and June.

BABACAN ON DIALOGUE BETWEEN TURKEY AND IRAQ
Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan said the attitude of local administration in the north of Iraq against terrorist organization PKK would also affect the dialogue between Turkey and Iraq.

FIRST CONTACT WITH NORTHERN IRAQI ADMINISTRATION
Ahmet Davatoglu, Turkish Prime Ministry`s Chief Adviser, and Turkey`s Special Envoy for Iraq Murat Ozcelik met Necirvan Barzani, prime minister of the regional Kurdish administration in north of Iraq. Barzani said that bilateral talks with Turkey would continue.

ADDITIONAL SOURCE FOR GAP
The government has persuaded the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to allocate more source to complete the Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP). Accordingly, the targeted "non-interest surplus" in the budget will be reduced to allocate 3 billion new Turkish liras to the project.

Members of labor unions Turk-Is and Hak-Is celebrated May 1st Labor Day in Istanbul and Ankara. When the Confederation of Revolutionary Workers Unions (DISK) insisted on marching to the Taksim Square, police intervened in demonstrators by using tear gas and water canon. The view was "unlikable".
