KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, July 23 (AFP) - A soldier in a US-led convoy was injured in a bomb blast Friday in the Taliban's former stronghold of southern Kandahar province, officials said.
"One coalition soldier was injured and one vehicle damaged," Master Sergeant Ann Bennett told AFP in a statement.
The bomb exploded near the convoy at 8.15 am (0345 GMT), 10 kilometers (six miles) north of Kandahar Air Field in Shorandam district as it drove along a road linking the city and airbase.
Kandahar airbase is home to thousands of US-led coalition troops.
Kandahar intelligence chief Abdullah Laghmanai said the bomb was planted in a car but he was unable to say how the blast was triggered.
"We don't know yet whether anyone was inside the vehicle when it exploded," he said.
Kandahar, some 450 kilometers (300 miles) southeast of Kabul, was the power base of the ousted Taliban regime and has been the scene of several bloody attacks mainly blamed on the extremists.
Another bomb exploded early Friday in neighbouring Uruzgan province 600 metres from a healthcare project run by US-led forces, but there were no injuries.
The attacks follow a blast Thursday in northeastern province Kunar's capital Asadabad, bordering Pakistan. No one was injured.
The Taliban who were forced out of power by a US-led military offensive in late 2001 have vowed to carry out attacks to disrupt presidential elections on October 9.
