DOHA, July 22 (AFP) - A previously unknown armed group on Thursday threatened to assassinate Iraqi's president and prime minister while sparing the police and army, Al-Jazeera television reported.
"A group calling itself the Tabuk Rockets Brigade vowed to eliminate the symbols of Iraq's interim government and to attack their offices with rockets including President Ghazi al-Yawar and Prime Minister Iyad Allawi," Al-Jazeera reported.
Tabuk is a city in Saudi Arabia.
Al-Jazeera said the group urged Iraqi police and military "to steer clear from the path of the mujahedeen (holy fighters) because they are not primary targets."
It added: "But this does not mean they would not take action against Iraqi military checkpoints and that it would not distinguish in the future between internal and external enemies."
The statement was accompanied by a video showing rockets being fired in an urban setting.
Members of Iraq's interim government, which took power on June 28, have been targetted in a string of attacks or attempted attacks in recent weeks.
Jordanian extremist Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi's group Tawhid wal Jihad (Unification and Holy War) has put a 285,000-dollars bounty on Allawi.
