TRABZON - Marc Pierini, head of the EU Commission delegation to Turkey, said on Wednesday that when Turkey joined the EU, 60 percent of rules and regulations, which would affect lives of Turkish citizens, would be dealt in Brussels, not in Ankara.
Speaking at a conference in Trabzon (Black Sea), Pierini said that EU negotiation process was a technical and political one, adding that Turkey should adopt and enact required procedures and meet political criteria to join the EU.
Pierini said that the countries, which joined the EU, had to renounce part of their sovereignty rights, thus it was an important decision to join the union.
Referring to the closure case opened against Turkey`s ruling Justice & Development (AK) Party, Pierini said that as Turkey was currently in negotiation process with the EU, the union was closely following the developments about the case. He also said that it was out of question for the EU to intervene in a legal process in Turkey.
Regrading PKK terrorist organization, Pierini said that PKK is on the terrorist organizations list of the EU. However he added that Turkey should implement social and economic policies in southeastern Anatolia. He said that the root of terrorism in the region stemmed from social and economic problems.
Referring to Cyprus issue, Pierini said that the EU welcomed a solution process which would be pursued under the aegis of the UN.
