TEHRAN, July 22 (AFP) - An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale on Thursday shook the area of Bam in southeastern Iran, where a powerful tremor killed more than 26,000 people in December, the official news agency IRNA said.
The tremor struck at 9:21 am (0451 GMT), and there were no reports of casualties, but IRNA said frightened residents ran into the streets.
"There are no human casualties," Bam governor Ali Mohammad Rafizadeh was quoted as saying by IRNA. "Some of the houses were damaged, but all water, electricity and telephone lines are functioning."
Late last month Iranian authorities revised to 26,271 the number of dead from the December 26 quake, which Bam officials had earlier said killed 43,000.
During the last century, around 20 major quakes hit Iran, leaving more than 140,000 people dead.
