Leaders Of Trade Unions Meet Turkish Premier On Where To Hold May Day Rally In Istanbul

ANKARA - Leaders of three major Turkish trade unions met Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday to seek an approval to stage a rally in Istanbul's Taksim square to celebrate Workers' Day.
Erdogan said the government would "assess" the request, with labor minister saying that the government would make a statement on the issue later in the day.
Workers' Day celebrations at Istanbul's Taksim Square have been banned since 1977, when gunmen opened fire on demonstrators. Thirty-seven people died.
