WASHINGTON, D.C. - A senior U.S. Department of State official said that the U.S. could not take sides in a discussion pertaining to the role of religion in a secular and constitutional republic in Turkey, noting however that the Turkish democracy was deeper compared to two decades ago.
Dan Fried, Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, said that the U.S. had full confidence in Turkish democracy.
Speaking at a session of a foreign relations committee in the U.S. House of Representatives, Fried stressed that, thanks to cooperation against terrorist organization PKK, Turkish-U.S. relations progressed strongly in the past six months.
