LEFKOSA - The technical committees and working groups began their talks in Cyprus in accordance with Turkish and Greek Cypriot leaders` agreement to start comprehensive talks in the island, a Turkish Cypriot spokesman said on Tuesday.
During a weekly press conference, Hasan Ercakica, presidential spokesman for Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), said that the agreement reached by TRNC`s President Mehmet Ali Talat and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias on March 21st was implemented in a determined way.
Ercakica said a delegation chaired by Undersecretary Ertugrul Apakan of the Turkish Foreign Ministry started technical studies on Tuesday.
"This shows that the Turkish Cypriot party contributes to the process with full capacity," Ercakica said.
Talat and Christofias met at the buffer zone on March 21st. The two leaders agreed to open the Lokmaci Gate to pedestrian crossing and to set up working groups and technical committees which would work for comprehensive negotiations.
Lokmaci Gate (Ledra Street crossing), which remained closed for 45 years since the start of communal conflict in Cyprus in 1963, was opened to pedestrian crossings on April 3rd.
