ANKARA - Bulgarian Ambassador to Turkey was summoned to Turkish Foreign Ministry on Friday after killing of a Turkish fisherman by Bulgarian coast guard teams.
Ambassador Branimir Mladenov was asked to make an explanation about the incident.
Turkish Embassy in Sofia and Consulate General in Burgas also continue initiatives about the deplorable incident.
Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman said Turkey expressed regret over the killing of Turkish citizen Yalcin Ercan on the fishing boat on April 17th.
Spokesman said such kind of acts against fishermen as they were fishing illegally can not be accepted.
"Turkey expects Bulgarian authorities to conclude the necessary investigation soon and give information to Turkey," he said.
The Turkish fisherman was killed on Thursday when Bulgarian coast guard teams opened fired on a Turkish boat for violating Bulgaria`s territorial waters and poaching.
In an earlier statement, Bulgarian officials said a coast guard boat drew near the Turkish fishing boat early in the morning and started to altercate. But the quarrel turned into a fight and Turkish fishing boat ran away from the scene.
But suddenly, a border patrol, who was wounded in his hand during the fight, started to fire on the Turkish fishing boat. Yalcin Ercan, the Turkish fisherman, was shot in the chest and died while being taken to a hospital in Tzarevo.
Bulgarian military prosecutors said they would file lawsuits against both Turkish fishermen and the Bulgarian border patrol who killed Ercan.
