U.N. Security Council Welcomes March 21st Agreement Between Turkish & Greek Cypriot Leaders

UNITED NATIONS - UN Security Council welcomed last month`s agreement between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders.
The Security Council also commended President Mehmet Ali Talat of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias for the political leadership they have shown.
On March 21st, the two leaders agreed to restart talks and they also agreed to open a crossing at Ledra Street as well as set up working groups and technical committees.
The statement, which was approved by the Council on Thursday, said that it was encouraged by the launch of the working groups and technical committees that would prepare the ground for the start of fully fledged negotiations, in a spirit of good faith, on a comprehensive and durable settlement.
The Security Council said that it looked forward to the results of this preparatory process within the three-month timeline agreed by the two leaders, which it was hoped would build trust, momentum and a sense of common interest in the search for a just and lasting solution.
The Council also welcomed the opening of Lokmaci Gate (Ledra Street).
Council members reaffirmed their commitment to the reunification of Cyprus based on a bicommunal, bizonal federation and political equality; and they would continue to support efforts of UN Secretary General.
