ANTALYA - A senior official with a regional cooperation organization said Thursday efforts were underway for the construction of a railway corridor that would connect China to Turkey via countries of Central Asia.
"This railway corridor will reach from China to Turkey, crossing over countries in Central Asia and Iran," said Kurshid Anwar, secretary general of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), a regional body with Turkey, Iran, Pakistan and seven Central Asian countries as the members.
The railway corridor constituted one of the biggest projects of the ECO and an important one for the whole Central Asian and the Middle Eastern regions, Anwar told a gathering of transportation ministers of the ECO members.
ECO is an intergovernmental regional organization established in 1985 by Turkey, Iran, and Pakistan to promote economic, technical and cultural cooperation among the member states.
In 1992, the organization was expanded to include Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
