ISTANBUL - Turkey`s political leader, former prime minister and the 8th president Turgut Ozal was commemorated on the 15th anniversary of his death.
Ozal`s family, friends and aides met for a ceremony at his tomb in Istanbul`s Topkapi district on Thursday.
Ozal`s son Ahmet Ozal said at the ceremony that Turkish people understands his father very well even 15 years after his demise.
Separately, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a message and said Ozal left his mark on Turkey on its way to becoming a modern country.
"Ozal had significant contributions to Turkey`s growth and its integration with the world," Erdogan said.
Ozal was the founder of Motherland (Anavatan) Party and served as the prime minister from 1983 to 1989. He was elected president in 1989 and died in 1993 of a heart attack while he was still on duty.
