BAGHDAD, July 20 (AFP) - A US marine was killed in action on Tuesday in Iraq`s rebel central-western Al-Anbar province, the US military said.
A member of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force "was killed in action today in the Al-Anbar province while conducting security and stability operations," the military said in a statement.
Al-Anbar is home to some of the most notorious flashpoints in Iraq such as the city of Fallujah, 50 kilometres (30 miles) west of Baghdad.
The city has been the target of recent US air strikes against suspected hideouts of al-Qaeda linked militant Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi that have killed scores of people.
According to the latest Defense Department figures, 661 US troops have been killed in action in Iraq since the start of the US-led war in March 2003.
