NEW YORK - U.S. Ambassador in Ankara said his country preferred prohibition lawsuit against Turkey`s ruling party to be resolved within the democratic secular system.
Attending an event in New York hosted by American Turkish Council on Wednesday, Ambassador Ross Wilson answered questions from reporters as to whether the prohibition case filed against the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party was discussed during U.S Vice President`s recent visit to Turkey.
Wilson said the prohibition case was not discussed in any of Dick Cheney`s meetings he was present at.
Wilson said he did not know all the issues discussed at the tete-a-tete meeting between Cheney and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan but what he learned from Cheney that bilateral and regional issues had been discussed during the meeting.
Wilson referred to speech the U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice delivered in Washington, D.C. and said the U.S. was watching closely the developments regarding the prohibition case against AK Party.
He said the U.S. wanted the issue to be resolved within Turkey`s democratic system in respect to the secularism principle.
Wilson said Turkish institutions had say over the issue.
