Romania Offloading Final 18 MiG-29s

Romania's air force is selling its remaining 18 MiG-29 fighters, which were retired two years ago. Defense officials concluded that disposal was more practical than upgrading the Soviet-era jets purchased in the 1980s.

The country already operates roughly 100 upgraded MiG-21s and plans to acquire 48 next-generation aircraft between 2008 and 2012. Additional purchases are expected to include 12 helicopters, four Hercules C-130 transports, nine medium-range aircraft, and six ground-to-air missile systems.

Romania joined NATO in March alongside six other nations, bringing the alliance to 26 members.
