SOFIA - A Turkish poacher fishing illegally for turbot in the Bulgarian waters of the Black Sea was accidentally shot and killed Thursday, as police tried to arrest him, said Bulgaria's police.

Two officers moved in on a boat with three men on board near the mouth of the River Rezovo, which marks the border between Bulgaria and Turkey. Turbot fishing there has been banned since Tuesday.

They managed to board the boat but the fishermen attacked them with bats. One of men was accidentally shot as he tried to grab the pistol of one of the officers and died on his way to hospital, a statement said.

The other two fishermen were arrested as they tried to sink the boat to hide the illegal haul of turbot, said police.
