LEFKOSA - Foreign minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said Wednesday that the UK ought to press for an extensive and egalitarian solution in Cyprus at a meeting with special representative of Britain for Cyprus.
TRNC Foreign Minister Turgay Avci received Britain's Special Envoy Joan Ryan who is holding meetings to encourage Turkish and Greek Cypriots for reunification of the island.
Avci, who issued a press release after the meeting, said he communicated to Ryan his view that the EU and specifically Britain as the guarantor state, ought to urge the Greek Cypriots for a solution which recognized Turkish Cypriots as their equal, for an extensive solution that was just and egalitarian.
"Political equality of the two communities, a bi-zonal structure, existence of two equal founder states, and Turkey's guarantor status is non-negotiable," Avci told Ryan during the meeting.
Ryan was received by TRNC Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer earlier in the day. The meeting was closed to press.
