Turkish warplanes attacked a group of outlawed PKK separatists in northern Iraq as they attempted to enter Turkish territory, the General Staff said on Wednesday. It added that one PKK separatist was killed in clashes inside Turkey.
The statement on the website of the Turkish army said the armed group was "rendered ineffective" in the raid, which took place Tuesday in the Avasin-Basyan area of northern Iraq, without saying how many separatists were killed.
Turkey and most of the international community, including the EU and the U.S., consider the PKK a terrorist organization. Turkey launched a major eight-day ground incursion against the PKK in February, sending thousands of troops into Iraq.
The Turkish army carries out regular operations in the mountainous southeastern areas of the country since the cross-border operation, while Turkish warplanes have been targeting PKK positions in northern Iraq since mid-December.
