ANKARA - Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan said that his government may consider to pass what he called "a medium-sized package of constitutional amendments" before Turkey`s highest court reached a verdict on the closure case filed against the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party.
"When I talk about a medium-sized package of constitutional amendments, and if we do it, we have to do it before the constitutional court makes it decisions so that the court will have a new legal base to make judgements on," Babacan told an interview with the British daily, Financial Times.
"Our constitution could have some problems and the European Union calls it a `system error` that we are faced right now. So we have to fix the system errors at one point, the sooner the better. And if we can do it earlier, it will prepare a new base for the court to make its decision," Babacan said.
Speaking about a proposed amendment to Article 301 of the Turkish penal code, Babacan said Turkish parliament would probably discuss the issue soon.
"So it is very likely that next week or so we could be able to finish the amending process of that article," he said.
