SAHIN SIGNALS RETREAT IN ARTICLE 301
Justice Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin signalled that the mandate to grant permission for investigation based on Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code -- soon to be brought to the parliamentary commission-- would be given to the Ministry of Justice rather than the President. "There are allegations suggesting that the President is not authorised for such a task in the constitution," said Sahin.
PM ERDOGAN: BAYKAL SHOULD NOT HIDE BEHIND ATATURK
"Mr. Baykal should stop making politics by hiding behind Ataturk. We know well that right after Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's death, the Republican Peoples' Party removed his figure from the Turkish Lira," said PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a speech.

TURKISH PREMIER LEAVES FOR QATAR
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan left for Qatar on Sunday for a two-day visit. Erdogan participated at a forum on democracy, development and free trade in Doha. Erdogan was set to meet Qatari amir, prime minister and foreign minister. Erdogan said he would discuss during his meetings cooperation opportunities in energy.
LANDSLIDE RISK THREATENS HOUSES, FACTORIES IN ISTANBUL DISTRICT
Istanbul's Buyukcekmece district is the home for thousands of houses and significant number of factories, and they are facing a landslide, a scholar from Yildiz Technical University said. "There are lots of houses and factories very close to the landslide area, and an earthquake or heavy rainfall could trigger the disaster," Prof. Sukru Gunsoy said. "It is too much risky to have these buildings here."

CHP REMOVED PORTRAIT OF ATATURK FROM MONEY
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan replied to main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) chairman Deniz Baykal who called him as 'unholy'. Erdogan said that CHP removed the portrait of Ataturk from money and walls of state institutions after he died. Erdogan called on CHP not to pursue politics over Ataturk.

Fenerbahce soccer team which forged ahead twice against Ankaraspor soccer team lost two points after a last minute goal. Fenerbahce was injured on the path to leadership in the league.

BARZANI: RELATIONS WITH TURKEY GETTING BETTER
Massoud Barzani, leader of Kurdish administration in the north of Iraq, met executives of Iraqi Kurdistan Democratic Party. Barzani said that they have developed positive relations with Turkey. Noting that they have good relations with the United States and the EU, Barzani expressed hope that they will further develop relations with Turkey, too.
FORD OTOSAN OVERTAKES EUROPE
Factory of Ford Otosan which was built on a swamp in northwestern province of Kocaeli had 538 million USD of benefit and passed 39 countries which were connected to Ford Europe. Ford Otosan had exported 222,000 of 286,000 vehicles it had produced last year.

TURKISH PREMIER SAYS NATION HAS NO PROBLEM WITH SECULARISM
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized leader of main opposition party Deniz Baykal on Sunday saying Turkish nation had no problem with secularity but with "Baykal's patronizing attitude." Erdogan accused Baykal of "hiding behind" the legacy of modern Turkey's founder, Ataturk. "It is the Republican People's Party which removed the figure of Ataturk from banknotes back then right after he passed away," Erdogan said.
JOURNALIST PROBED UNDER GANG INVESTIGATION TO HAVE HEART SURGERY
Journalist Ilhan Selcuk, who was briefly detained under an investigation against a suspected gang known as "Ergenekon," is set to go under an open heart surgery on Monday. Selcuk suffered a cardiac spasm and pneumonia after he was released.

SECULARISM CAN NOT BE PUT TO VOTE
PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized Republican Peoples' Party Leader Deniz Baykal in the Youth Branches Congress of Justice and Development (AK) Party. "Don't hide behind Ataturk anymore. It was not CHP, but the nation who founded the republic. Secularism entered the Constitution with the will of the Parliament and our people adopted it. There is no need to put secularism to vote."
PARLIAMENT TO DISCUSS ARTICLE 301 THIS WEEK
The bill amending Article 301 and 305 of the Turkish Penal Code will be discussed at the Parliamentary Commission on Justice this week. A change regarding the mandate to grant authorization for investigation is on the agenda.

Turkish soldiers started an operation after they found the location of seven PKK terrorists in Cudi Mountain who sneaked into Turkey from the north of Iraq. The region was under gun fire yesterday.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan strongly criticised the policies of main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP). Erdogan called on CHP chairman Deniz Baykal not to make politics by hiding after Ataturk.

FIRE IN FUEL OIL FACILITIES SCARED KOCAELI
The Korfez district of Kocaeli escaped a great danger yesterday. Three people were wounded gravely in the fire that broke in a fuel oil filling facility. The fire fighters who prevented the fire from spreading to ethanol and sulphur tanks averted a big disaster.
ITALY DID NOT GIVE WAY TO APPROACHES ACCUSING TURKEY
As Italians were going to the ballot box for elections yesterday, a murder also concerning Turkey climbed high on agenda in Italy. The murder of Italian artist Pippa Bacca in Gebze town of Turkey, who hitchhiked dressed in a wedding-gown to Israel for peace caused grief. But Italian people did not give way to approaches accusing Turkey. While Italian artist's sister said, "This murder could have happened anywhere in the world," the media covered the murder with common sense. The Italian press underlined these sentences, "The Ambassador, Consular and the Turkish Police displayed the best possible efforts. People in Turkey are very polite." The murder deeply effected Turkey. Turkish PM Erdogan who expressed his grief on the way to Qatar thanked the artist's sister and fiancee for showing concern regarding the effect of the murder on Turkey's image: "Their humane approaches mindful of world facts is worthy of praise."

TURKEY, IRAN TO COOPERATE AGAINST PKK
Turkey is set to seek cooperation opportunities with Iran in the fight against the terrorist PKK, after Ankara launched operations hitting PKK hideouts in Iraq's north in cooperation with the U.S. and Iraqi government. A high-level security committee is set to gather Turkish and Iranian officials in the Turkish capital, Ankara, which would discuss "ways of active cooperation and measures" against terrorism.
U.S. GENERAL SAYS THERE ARE THREE TURKS IN IRAQI PRISONS
U.S. General Douglas Stone in Iraq said that there were three Turks among over 23 thousand prisoners held in Iraqi detention facilities. "I do not know what these three people are with but all the foreigns held in Iraqi prisoners are people who threatened Iraq's security," Douglas said. The U.S. general also said that no Turkish officials had made contact with him about the the Turkish prisoners.
