BERLIN, July 19 (AFP) - Cameroon coach Winfried Schafer is the latest name in the frame to succeed Rudi Voller as manager of the German national team.
The search to replace Voller, who stepped down after Germany crashed out of Euro 2004 in the first round, was reopened when former Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld unexpectedly turned down the job.
Schafer, who has steered Cameroon through the tragedy of the death of Marc-Vivien Foe during last year's Confederations Cup in France, has a contract with the Indomitable Lions until after the 2006 World Cup.
But Franz Beckenbauer, speaking in his capacity as vice-president of the German football federation, told Monday's Bild newspaper: "Winni Schafer is also one of our candidates".
Schafer joins a group that is believed to include PSV Eindhoven's Dutch coach Guus Hiddink, and Denmark coach Morton Olsen.
Cameroon face a tough task trying to qualify for the World Cup as they have a six point penalty meted out to them by FIFA for wearing their controversial one-piece suit at the 2004 African Nations Cup in Tunisia.
