A ceremony will take place at 09:00 today honouring the opening of the Lokmacy-Ledra gateway which had been divided for 52 years and split by British military when they divided the city walls of Nicosia with barbed wire as a result of the communal conflict which broke out between the two communities.
The opening will take place with the participation of President Mehmet Ali Talat's authority for UN and EU negotiations Özdil Nami, Advisor for the Greek Cypriot Presidency Yorgo Yakovu, Turkish Cypriot Mayor for Nicosia Cemal Bulutodlu, Greek Cypriot Mayor for Nicosia Eleni Mavrou, Deputy for the UN General Secretary's Special Representative for Cyprus Elizabeth Sphere and UNDP authority Titiana Zennaro.
It is expected that mutual crossings will commence after the official ceremony at 09:30.
