ANKARA - Turkish State Minister Guldal Aksit met on Monday United Nations (UN) Population Fund's newly-appointed Representative to Turkey Anne-Birgitte Albrechtsen.
Aksit hoped that Turkey and UN Population Fund would continue to cooperate to realize new projects, and said that Turkey expected the Fund to support projects related not only to women but also to children and the disabled.
Noting that violence against women was still a problem in Turkey and the world, Aksit said that Turkey had recently adopted new measures to prevent violence against women and children and now is looking for a support from the UN.
Albrechtsen said that she was aware of Turkey's initiatives and cooperation, and expressed her hope that their cooperation would be fruitful.
Stating that violence against women is a worldwide problem, Albrechtsen said that they could cooperate to develop an action plan to prevent this.
Stressing that socio-economic problems were the reason of the violence within the family, Albrechtsen noted that the UN Population Fund was ready to extend assistance to Turkey to end this.
Albrechtsen said that the Fund was also ready to cooperate in projects on children, elderly and the disabled, and pledged to extend support to such projects in Turkey.
