Senior EU Official Calls For "Renewed Momentum" In Turkey's Reforms

ISTANBUL - Head of European Union`s executive branch urged Turkey on Friday to do more in its efforts to become a member to the Union.
"Turkey should find a renewed momentum in political reforms and make progress in certain areas, and full membership is only possible with political and social consensus, which would include an agreement on both reforms and the EU accession," said Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission.
Speaking at a luncheon given by Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan in Istanbul, Barroso said "the spirit of the integration process lies in a consensus environment."
"We may not always get what we want in achieving this process and we may sometimes need to give concessions, which is not a weakness but it is the spirit of the European consensus," Barroso said.
Barroso visited Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarchate and Istanbul mufti earlier in the day.
