IZMIR - Representatives of German tourism agencies arrived in Turkey's Aegean province of Izmir on Friday to promote regional tourism.
The 50-member German delegation will make recommendations to Izmir's executives about ways to promote regional tourism after they visit the city and its surrounding, executives of the Sunexpress Airlines and Turkish Hoteliers' Federation said.
The airlines and federation will host an Aegean workshop at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Izmir on Saturday. German tourism and business travel magazine FMV is also supporting the visit and workshop.
The magazine earlier contributed to several events in Turkey's southern province of Antalya and the metropolis, Istanbul.
German delegation visited historical and touristic attractions in downtown Izmir, including the historical elevator, Agora and Kemeralti. They will also see resort town of Cesme and historical towns of Bergama (Pergamon) and Selcuk.
Cesme --half an hour drive from Izmir-- is an ideal place for windsurfing, whereas Bergama--100 kilometers north of this city-- is one of Turkey's oldest civilized settlements that has yielded archaeological treasures of worldwide importance starting from prehistoric times through the Ionic, Roman and Byzantine civilizations.
Among these oldest settlements is ancient spa of Allianoi, dating predominantly from the Roman Empire period, 2nd century A.D.
Selcuk town is also embracing Turkey's best-known ancient settlement of Ephesus and the House of Virgin Mary.
