BEIJING (CIHAN) - The 2004 Asian Cup kicked off on Saturday in Chinese capital Beijing.
Host team China faced Bahrain on Saturday evening in opening match of the tournament. China was held 2-2 ties by Bahrain last night match. Bahrain took lead at first half. Two goals in second half put China ahead but late equalizer from Bahrain tied the score with 2-2 score.
Four Chinese cities including Beijing Jinan, Chengdu and Chongqing has been housing the matches of Asian Cup 2004. The winner of the tournament will be determined in August of 7th. Fourteen teams in four groups have been contesting for title. Defending champions Japan, 2002 FIFA World Cup semi-finalists Korea Republic and host nation China are favorites of the championship.
China wants to attain the title by using advantage of being home nation. However, matches fail to attract enough attention due to their low quality.
Meanwhile, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam have offered their bid to Asian Football Confederation to host, 2007 Asia Cup Football Championship.
