Cicek: We Applied To Austria For Extradition Of Cakici

ISTANBUL/ANKARA - Turkish Justice Minister Cemil Cicek said on Friday, ''we applied to Austrian officials for temporary arrest of Alaattin Cakici. We will send the extradition dossier about him as soon as possible.''
Replying to questions of journalists about developments following capture of Cakici, the Turkish notorious mafia boss, in Graz city of Austria on July 14, Cicek told reporters, ''we applied to Austrian officials for temporarily arrest of Alaattin Cakici. We will send the extradition dossier about him as soon as possible. In the past, presence of death sentence in our Constitution caused problems in extradition of some criminals. Now, all expressions of 'death sentence' and 'execution of death sentence' were excluded from the laws.''
Meanwhile, Police Department Deputy Director General and Spokesman Ramazan Er recalled that a passport was found on Cakici arranged in the name of Faik Meral, saying, ''the police found Meral in Izmir and detained him.''
It was revealed that Meral retired from the National Intelligence Agency (MIT).
Releasing a statement, the MIT said that there had not been any direct or indirect relations between the agency and Meral since his retirement on October 18, 1999.
