ANKARA - Ufuk Uras, chairman of the Freedom & Solidarity Party (ODP) of Turkey, said Friday he has proposed to organize a round-table meeting for a compromise among political parties.
"The chairmen of the political parties in the parliament can organize a round-table meeting, and a comprehensive constitutional amendment can be made by institutionalizing democracy," he told reporters after his half-an-hour meeting with President Abdullah Gul at the Cankaya Presidential Palace in capital Ankara.
Uras said he told Gul that there is need for a huge compromise in 2008, which is a critical year for internal and external developments.
"We underlined importance of overcoming the crisis through democracy and assuming an attitude towards democratization against developments that may harm the internal political stability," he told.
Uras said President Gul and he also underscored importance of dialogue and living together.
"I have a belief that the tension can be eased by the help of Mr. President because I cannot see any other way out than taking a decisive step towards democratization," he told.
