ANKARA (CIHAN) - The Turkish Foreign Affairs Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gül has refuted US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) claims that Turkey runs torture centres.
Gül was answering a tabled question at the Turkish National Assembly which the Republican People's Party Izmir Deputy Kemal Anadol had addressed to the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayip Erdogan. Foreign Minister Gül declared that Turkey shared the international indignation over the inhuman treatment by US forces of Iraqi detainees in Iraq, and added that the Turkish government had condemned this behaviour.
Gül noted; "As I stated in my speech in the general assembly of the Turkish parliament on 25th May 2004, these incidents are not compatible with international law and universal values. The US has promised to root out and punish those responsible for this inhumane behaviour."
