ANKARA - Alaattin Cakici, the head of an organized crime gang, was captured in Graz city of Austria overnight, sources said on Thursday.
Releasing a statement, the Turkish Interior Affairs Ministry stated that Cakici fled from Turkey in May as his trial was continuing.
Recalling that the Turkish Security Department cooperated with many security departments in Europe to capture Cakici, the ministry said, ''as a result of joint efforts of Turkish and Austrian security forces, Cakici was captured in Graz city of Austria at about 19.30 local time on July 14, 2004 with a false Turkish passport.''
The statement added that the Turkish Ministry of Justice had launched necessary initiatives in Austria for extradition of Cakici.
