Closure Case In Turkey Is Anti-democratic Measure, Russian MP

MOSCOW - Mihail Margelov, chairman of the International Relations Committee of Duma - the lower chamber of Russian parliament, said Tuesday the closure case against ruling Justice & Development (AK) Party in Turkey is an "anti-democratic" measure.
"The ruling party in Turkey is facing a ban risk today," Margelov said.
Margelov also said lifting of headscarf ban in higher education caused this closure case.
"Without studying Turkish laws in detail, we can say that the most strategic aim in Turkey is democratization," Margelov said.
Margelov also said the decision to lift headscarf ban is one made by the Turkish parliament, and criticized the closure case.
Turkey is a member of the Council of Europe, he told.
Margelov said, "therefore, experts of the Venice Committee can be consulted for all legislative works."
