ANKARA (CIHAN) - Turkish lawmakers will vote today to decide whether to send the former Prime Minister and three former State Ministers before the Turkish Supreme Court of Justice.
The parliament general assembly will discuss corruption investigations into the accused politicians and will vote whether to send them before the court.
Accused politicians can defend themselves in parliament if they wish.
The Turkish parliamentary Corruption Investigation Commission decided last month that former Turkish energy ministers Cumhur Ersümer and Zeki Çakan should be brought before the Turkish Supreme Court of Justice.
Cumhur Ersümer was accused of illegally intervening in energy contracts while Zeki Cakan was charged with lowering the energy prices of natural gas being exported to Russia contrary to the interests of the Turkish state. They were accused of abusing their posts.
The Corruption Investigation Commission of the Turkish Parliament decided early last month that the former Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz and State Minister Günes Taner should be tried in the Supreme Court in relation to allegations of corruption at the time of the sale of Turkbank.
If 276 of the 550 deputies of the Turkish Parliament vote yes, the accused former prime minister and state ministers will then appear before the Supreme Court.
In Turkey, high-level state officials such as presidents, prime ministers and ministers are tried in the Turkish Constitutional Court in the name of the Supreme Court.
